Using the Remote Install feature of Watchful

The Watchful Remote Installer allows you to install extensions to all your Joomla 1.5, 2.5, and Joomla 3+ websites directly from the Watchful Dashboard.

We recommend using the Remote Installer when:

  • Installing new/custom add-ons to your Joomla site or sites (like most of out tools, the Remote Installer can be used on many sites at once).
  • Update existing add-ons that are not natively supported such as rare paid extensions (updates for the most popular paid add-ons are natively supported).

Before proceeding, please review the video preview below:

The Remote Installer provides 3 methods to deliver the installers to your sites:

Upload and Install

  1. From your Dashboard, select the sites you want to update using the checkboxes at the left of the site name.

Pro Tip: Use filters or tags to find similar sites quickly.

  2. Click the Installer button in the top toolbar to load the Remote Install screen.
  3. Click the Choose File button and select the desired package file.

Pro Tip: Only select packages that you could normally install using the Joomla installer: only ZIP and TGZ.

  4. Click the Install All button to send your packages to all the sites.

This feature seems simple but can be very powerful in combination with some of the other features of Watchful, here are some of our staff's favourite tips:

Tip 1:

At times Joomla releases 'bridge releases' for sites that cannot be upgrade to the next full release. Bridge Releases are not supported by the 1-Click Joomla Updater.

For example with the release of Joomla 3.2.0 a bridge release was also made for Joomla 3.1.6 and can be downloaded from the joomlacode.org repository. You can get the link from there and enter the URL in the updater.

Tip 2:

Do you have an extension on your site that does not support automatic updates? Use the Extension search field in your dashboard to filter for sites that have this extension installed so you can easily select all appropriate sites to install the update on.

Tip 3:

Use Tags for similar sites. For example if you have a common site types (like Silver, Gold, Platinum site packages) create a tag for them. Now you can easily select all the sites in a package to install the extension on.
